I was in the chatroom of KICK-ASS Stepmom the other day, and a stepmom said something along the lines of
“I’m trying to do everything right. I’m looking after the kids, I’m cleaning, I’m biting my tongue, I’m making dinner, but…” and then she went on about her situation.
I was like, WOAH, girl! I want to back this truck up for a second.
Being a good stepmom does not mean you’re a live-in maid.
It does not mean you don’t have a voice.
It does not mean that you have to sacrifice your needs.
It does not mean you’ll have to be the chef, house cleaner, chauffeur and in charge of all the laundry.
Unfortunately, this is what a lot of stepmoms do.
You go in and start doing everything for everyone. You bite your tongue; you clear your schedule when the kids are with you. You sacrifice everything for this new life… and that is all fine until one day, you feel like you’ve lost yourself.
You feel resentful.
You feel like you have no control over your life.
You want change, but you don’t know how to go back.
Change is possible.
You can ask for help.
You can say no.
It’s not all on you.
You can set boundaries (with love).
You can disengage (the right way).
You can improve relationships.
You can find yourself again.
You don’t need to feel good enough until you’re not.
You don’t need to sacrifice your own mental health and well-being.
